Munich or München is the capital of Bavaria and one of the most popular city break destinations in Europe. Nowhere else in Germany’s south will you find a greater array of exquisite shopping outlets. Its proximity to the Alps, Austria and Italy makes Munich the most popular place to live in Germany. Many renowned international companies have their headquarters here.
Munich’s landmark is the Frauenkirche with its distinctive twin onion spires. Nearby is the Marienplatz with the town hall in Neo-Gothic style. Also worth mentioning are its market, the Viktualienmarkt, the impressive buildings on Maximilianstraße, the Englischer Garten and the Hofbräuhaus - most of them well known beyond Germany’s borders.
Munich and the art of beer brewing are inseparable. You can see for yourselves not only at the world-famous Oktoberfest but also in the many beer gardens that uphold this tradition. Wonderful settings where a typical Bavarian Brotzeit meal with a Maß (litre) of decent beer will taste even better.

The great outdoors are on Munich’s doorstep. In the south-east, you will find Lake
Chiemsee with its islands
Herreninsel,
Fraueninsel and
Krautinsel - a popular destination, especially for sailing and water sports. King Ludwig’s fairy tale palace Herrenchiemsee is located on Herreninsel.
The region south of the lake is called
Chiemgau. It has enticing hillwalking trails, leading through breathtaking scenery to high mountain pastures where inns serve simple fare. Just across the border in Austria lies Salzburg, Mozart’s tradition-steeped birthplace.
