Typical for the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are the long stretches of Baltic coast and the Mecklenburg Lake District with approximately 1,000 lakes nestling in unspoilt countryside.

Rügen is the largest German island, just off the Mecklenburg coast. Its spectacular chalk cliffs were made famous by the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. Right next to the island lies its “little sister” Usedom.

Three larger towns - Schwerin, Neubrandenburg and Güstrow - with their diverse cultural attractions and historic sights - are located on or around the lakes.

Güstrow features the largest Renaissance palace in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in a medieval setting.
