Marburg and the Rothaar Mountains

The Rothaar Mountains boast some of the most beautiful scenic woodlands that delight hillwalkers and less ambitious walkers alike.

The Rothaarsteig is an attractive, 154-kilometre long, varied hiking trail, stretching from Brilon in the Sauerland on the northern edge of the Rothaar Mountains, across the hills of the Lahn-Dill region to Dillenburg in the Westerwald.

On the southern slope of the Rothaar Mountains lies the hamlet Raumland, which looks back on a 400-year tradition of slate mining. Its show mine is well worth a visit. Only 3 kilometers further north, you can pamper body and soul in a spa, Bad Berleburg, which is known for its Kneipp hydrotherapy treatments and its salubrious air. Prince Sayn-Wittgenstein’s magnificent castle is set in wonderful parkland in the heart of the historic old town.

Siegen has an impressive cultural offering - theatres and concerts, cabaret and political satire. Another place to visit is the charming old university town of Marburg beneath the imposing castle. Marburg’s most famous church is the gothic St Elisabeth Church. Being a university town, Marburg also has no shortage of pubs.
