Hannover, Hildesheim and Göttingen

Hannover is internationally renowned as a venue for trade fairs. The hosting of the first world exposition in Germany, EXPO 2000, helped it to achieve worldwide renown. The city centre features a large recreation area around an artificial lake, the Maschsee. The many museums show artwork covering 5 millennia. The main attractions of the old city centre are the Marktkirche and the old townhall, the southernmost examples of north German brick Gothic architecture.

Following the river Leine southwards, we arrive in Hildesheim. St. Michaelis Church and the cathedral are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On the market square, you will find the most beautiful timber-framed house in the world, the Knochenhaueramtshaus - originally it was the butchers’ guild hall, built in 1529.

Göttingen is a university town that is steeped in academic traditions. More than 40 Nobel Prize laureates either studied or taught here - amongst others, Robert Koch, Max Planck and Günther Grass. The town landmark, the Gänseliesel bronze figure on the market fountain, is the most-kissed girl in Germany. Every PhD student must kiss her after passing his exam. Thanks to the presence of many international students and visitors, Göttingen has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and its unique take on looking to the future whilst respecting the past is what makes this town so special.

Celle boasts a very attractive old town centre. The Duke’s palace began its life in the Middle Ages as a moated castle and is now surrounded by a beautiful park which is next to the old centre with its lovingly restored timber-framed houses.
