Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The Garmisch-Partenkirchen region in south-west Upper Bavaria comprises the market towns Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Murnau on Lake Staffelsee with the Wetterstein and Karwendel mountain ranges - part of the northern Alps - to the south.

The highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains, Zugspitze, is nearly 3,000 metres high and is Germany’s highest mountain. It offers excellent skiing opportunities in winter, while in summer the region attracts hillwalkers and climbers alike who enjoy its magnificent alpine scenery, remote valleys, crystal-clear lakes and beautiful nature reserves with their unique landscape panoramas.

In the North the mountains stretch down towards the foothills with their expansive lakes and marshlands, the Pfaffenwinkel. The Murnauer Moos, south of Murnau and Lake Staffelsee, is the largest single marsh area in Central Europe, home to nearly a thousand plant and several thousand animal species. Garmisch-Partenkirchen has made a name for itself as a ski resort.
