Bavaria is the largest of Germany’s federal states and consists of the regions of Franconia, East Bavaria, Allgäu and Upper Bavaria.
Nuremberg has a historic town centre, surrounded by massive walls with 80 towers. It has a number of medieval and early modern buildings that are of considerable historical and cultural interest like the Kaiserburg (imperial castle) - the city’s landmark. Nuremberg’s Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) is known the world over, making the eyes not just of children shine more brightly during the festive season. Last but not least, the home town of the painter Albrecht Dürer, Nuremberg has a wealth of museums and galleries. On the site of the former gathering grounds of the NSDAP, a documentation centre deals with the role of Nuremberg during the Nazi era.
Regensburg, one of the oldest cities in Germany, is located on the banks of the river Danube in East Bavaria. In summer, its historic town centre has an almost Italian feel about it. Many wine bars, restaurants and street cafés put tables out on the pavements where you can while away the balmy summer nights. The Steinerne Brücke is 330 metres long and Germany’s oldest stone-built bridge. People already crossed it 850 years ago to enter the town. It was the model, amongst other things, for Prague’s famous bridge, the Karlsbrücke. Regensburg cathedral, the tower houses so typical for this city and an incredible number of churches and monasteries make Regensburg a fascinating place.

The palace of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis has played a role in Regensburg’s history for over 250 years. The former monastery St. Emmeran is one of the largest still inhabited palaces in Europe and is open to visitors. The museums it houses provide insight into the life of this aristocratic family.
From this eastern corner of Bavaria, Prague - the cosmopolitan capital of the Czech Republic - is only 200 kilometres away.
The
Allgäu, the southernmost corner of Swabia, is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in Germany. Lush pastures alternate with steep mountain slopes, crystal-clear lakes, green woodlands and romantic valleys.
