Frankfurt is the city of finance, home to the European Central Bank and the German Stock Exchange. Due to its many skyscrapers, it has been dubbed Mainhattan. It is a place full of contrasts - the latest contemporary buildings of some of the world’s most important banks stand alongside historic buildings like the Römer Townhall or the newly restored Old Opera House.
The buzz of the financial centre fizzles out in the almost village-like surroundings of Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen. Visitors enjoy the many local pubs that serve “Ebbelwoi”, the local version of cider as well as Frankfurt’s enormously diverse cultural offering.
Frankfurt is the venue for many international trade fairs, one of which - the Frankfurt Trade Fair - dates back to 1240. It has the second largest airport in Europe. The city’s international dimension is obvious everywhere. The jazz scene in particular has benefited from this multicultural atmosphere. In the 1940s Swing was extremely popular here and icons of Modern Jazz like the Mangelsdorff brothers were part of the scene. The Frankfurt Jazz Festival was the first of its kind and is still going strong.
