A museum city or the world’s capital for lovers? For centuries, the City of the Doges exerted its influence on the whole world and exported Italian art and culture via its merchants and explorers, the most famous being Marco Polo. The wealth of its inhabitants enabled them to build marvellous palaces along its bridges and canals.
The present-day city still reflects this glorious past, from St. Mark’s Square to the Doges’ Palace, not forgetting the island ghetto (one of the world’s oldest Jewish quarters) and the Rialto Bridge.
The Venice Carnival, an annual event lasting ten days, is one of the most renowned and highly appreciated in the world.
