Tivoli

Thirty kilometres from Rome, Tivoli in the Latium region, has two of the finest Roman villas ever built. Hadrian’s villa, built in the 2nd century for the emperor of the same name, is a series of pavilions, the idea being to represent the entire artistic and cultural diversity of the Roman Empire and its different regions. The Villa d’Este was built on the foundations of an old convent for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este. While the villa is remarkable and has an extremely rich collection of frescoes and paintings, the most impressive sight is the gardens with numerous pools, fountains and water jets in harmony with the surrounding vegetation.
