Tarquinia

The Etruscans were traders from the northern Mediterranean who influenced much of Italian civilisation by their art and know-how. One of the oldest testimonies to their existence is the necropolis at Tarquinia. More than 6000 tombs were carved into the rock here, 200 of them painted and dating back to 7 BC. These painted tombs are superb examples of this lost civilisation, from the tomb of the leopard, the Baron’s tomb, bulls, lionesses or scenes of hunting and fishing.
