Orvieto


The town of Orvieto, half way between Rome and Florence, is set amongst majestic countryside with its lakes and centuries-old vineyards. It is perched on a giant rock and is a veritable jewel through which you can glimpse a rich and varied history from Etruscan times to the modern age. Every building invites you to travel through time: visit the Etruscans with the Belvedere Temple or the Sanctuary of Cannicella, the Middle Ages with the Palazzo Comunale, the Palazzo del Popolo, the Dome or again the many churches, San Giovenale and Sant’Andrea being the finest examples. The Renaissance and the modern times have all left their traces on the architecture and the museums of Orvieto, too. A visit to the subterranean labyrinths hewn out of the rock testify to the ingenuity of the inhabitants in storing food, water and, above all, the wine so much appreciated in the region.
