Situated on the banks of the River Pô delta, Ferrara became one of the main centres of Renaissance and Humanist movements in the 15th and 16th century, and formed the basis of modern urban planning. The city centre with the magnificent Romanesque/Gothic Cathedral is linked to palaces (Diamantes, Este, Schifanoia, etc.) and quarters (Hercules 1 of Este promenade, etc.) achieving a remarkable result.
