Bergamo


Occupied by the Celts, Romans, Goths and Lombards, Bergamo has, above all, kept traces of its medieval civilisation. Situated in Lombardy, on the principal hill in the district, the upper town is the historic heart of Bergamo, surrounded by a long network of town walls. While the town continued to expand into the lower town, its principal monuments can be found in the "Citta Alta", around the Piazza Vecchia (including the Cappella Coleoni and Basilica of Saint Maria Maggiore).
