Saint Francis of Assisi was born in this Ombrian town. The founder of the Franciscan Order, he preached in favour of a simple, poor life, known to thousands of followers the world over. At his death, the Pope had a basilica erected in his honour and his remains are buried in the crypt.
In addition to the basilica and its superb frescoes (by Giotto in particular), the town has some magnificent buildings including the castle, Church of St. Clare, the prison hermitage and numerous other religious buildings that make it a historical and spiritual place of considerable importance.
