Milan
While Milan is one of the largest and richest cities in Lombardy, it was also the one that suffered the most damage in the Second World War. Most of its marvels were fortunately preserved: the Cathedral (Duomo), Sforza castle (the seat of power in Milan of the Viscontis and then the Sforzas), the Scala (lyrical theatre where Verdi and Rossini officiated), the Ambrosienne, Brera and Poldi Pezzoli art galleries and the famous Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Not forgetting the many evocative religious buildings all over the city where St Ambrose was the bishop
