Fontenay Abbey

Founded in the early 12th century by Saint-Bernard, abbot of Clairvaux, this Cistercian monastery was consecrated by Pope Edward VII. From a major monastery (it housed up to 300 monks) the abbey became a paper factory after it was sold during the Revolution. It was not until the early 20th century that is was restored and opened to the public. This superb Romanesque complex (listed by UNESCO) will enchant visitors. Do not forget to visit the cloister, chapter house, church, refectory and the host of other marvels in this exceptional building.
