Le Puy en Velay owes its fame to Godescalc who made it the first departure point for the Santiago de Compostella pilgrimage in the 10th century. The Episcopal city is dominated by two enormous rocks where exceptional monuments were erected (The Chapel of St-Michel d’Aiguilhe and, on Corneille Rock, a statue of Notre-Dame de France). A visit to the Romanesque Notre-Dame Cathedral and its cloister is essential, as well as to the Crozatier Museum and the chateaux of Polignac and St-Vidal.
