One of the main elements of worldwide renown in the Dordogne are the caves with prehistoric paintings in the Vézère Valley, composed of a series of sites and caves with murals tracing the art and life of prehistoric man.
The most famous of these, Lascaux, contains over 1,500 extraordinary rock paintings. It has been closed to the public in order to preserve the site but Lascaux II is a gripping replica, open to visitors.
