Perched on a rocky spur on the right bank of the River Aude stands the medieval fortified city of Carcassonne, timeless and magnificent.
The freestone gateways, castle and Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, restored in the 19th century are veritable marvels. Since the 14th century, the “Pont Vieux” (Old Bridge) has led to the lower town called the “Bastide Saint-Louis”.
Here again is a mixture of all shapes and kinds of age-old houses, private mansions, churches and cathedrals in a mix of shapes forming an incomparable ensemble.
