On the shores of Lake Lucerne in the centre of Switzerland, Lucerne has an atmosphere of festivity throughout the year. The city centre is entirely given over to pedestrians and has medieval architecture, including the Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument which are its finest examples. There is a busy cultural life composed of festivals, dance shows, concerts and museums (including the superb Transport museum).

While trips up Mount Pilatus and the Stanserhorn are definitely worthwhile, a motorboat trip on the lake is the ultimate.
