Küsnacht, cheek by jowl with the economic capital of Switzerland, belongs to the group of villages that nestle on the banks of Lake Zurich looking comfortably up at the mountains. A tranquil little city, just right for excursions and relaxation.
There’s no distance at all between Zurich and Küsnacht. The economic capital of Switzerland has been voted European champion for Quality of Life on several occasions; and there’s no doubt that some of this tranquillity has rubbed off on its neighbour on the north east bank of Lake Zurich. Küsnacht, a residential “suburb” of Zurich, offers the visitor the tranquillity of its lakeside banks, along which in times gone by would stroll those famous people who chose to take up residence in Zurich like Wagner, Lenin, Einstein, James Joyce, Thomas Mann and Carl Gustav Jung, a psychiatrist who modelled himself on Freud and whose clinic is to be found in Küsnacht.
The commune is also home to a Gothic church whose bell tower stands out against the sky and an ancient 14th century tower. Other attractions are: a number of historic houses and an ancient mill, Obere Mühle, which is also home to the local museum.
If you enjoy walking, Küsnacht is an ideal place to set off from. The gorges of Küsnachter Tobel are somewhere you can explore rocks created by ice age erosion and come across many animals and rare plants.
Küsnacht is also the first place you pass through when you take the very popular tourist route around the lake. From Zurich to Zurich, passing through Küsnacht, Rapperswil, the ancient Kappel Abbey, Albis mountain pass and Uetliberg. You have an opportunity to find out whether there is really a heaven on earth, and maybe it is here!
