Situated between
Lausanne and Montreux, this idyllic landscape of terraced vineyards and picturesque villages offers a unique panoramic view over
Lake Leman and the Alps. Although the Romans once cultivated vineyards in this region, the growing of wine on terraces only caught on in the 11th century, when they were planted by Benedictine monks.
These rich hillsides now produce distinguished wines with world famous appellations (Chadonne, Villette, Epesses, St Saphorin, and others.) The ideal way to enjoy this pastoral landscape is to walk along one of the many “wine routes” or footpaths that crisscross the hills and offer unbeatable oenological walks for gourmets and all lovers of fine wine!
UNESCO recently unveiled the latest additions to its World Heritage List and has chosen to include Lavaux and its terraced vineyards amongst its prestigious sites!
