This island, situated 12 kilometres from Cape Town, is an exceptional site, the name of which symbolises the fight against oppression and the victory of freedom. For four hundred years it served as a prison for convicts, political prisoners in particular, the most famous of which was Nelson Mandela.
The end of Apartheid made this island of captivity into a symbol of the end of racism, dictatorship and the birth of a new era opening up to equality and democracy.
