The Namib desert, the oldest in the world, is formed of an immense expanse of sand, the aspect of which changes as it is swept by the wind, the landscape broken up by rocks and rare plants. In this wild, arid desert, stretching along the South Atlantic Ocean, temperatures soar in the southern hemisphere summer. While it is rare to find signs of life there, when it manages to survive it takes on greater value. Along the red dunes are Ana trees with their white flowers and nutritive pods, the wild dog known as the Welwitschia, the puku, oribi or waterbuck.

Further on in Sossusvlei, temporary lakes can sometimes be seen, formed when the rain manages to reach the Namib desert.
