The Kalahari desert (meaning "Big Thirst" in Tswana) extends through Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. It is called a desert since there are vast expanses of brown sand, no rivers or permanent lakes.
However, it often rains and develops a brush-like vegetation still inhabited by a small population of natives, the Bushmen.
From a fauna standpoint, the Kalahari contains a few rare species such as the sand antelope, the black desert rhinoceros and the "King Cheetah".
