Southern Africa

Cape Whale Route

In the southwest of South Africa, at the confluence of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, whales migrate along the coast, feeding their young. The spectacle of the whales passing by can be observed along the coast nicknamed the "Cape Whale Route", the principal sites being Lamberts, Elandsbaai, Saldanha and Yzerfontain Bays, not forgetting Cape Town, Hermanus and Arniston. These giant cetaceans, of which there are seventy-five species (including the famous Southern Right Whales), thrusting their way through the water, sometimes pass only a few metres from land, their song echoing as they sport in the water with their companions.
