Alsace-Lorraine

The TGV EST EUROPEEN puts Alsace and Lorraine on your doorstep!

From 10 June 2007 the TGV EST EUROPEEN will link up 30 new towns in France and Europe. Why not come aboard with us and discover some amazing places that are now within easy reach?

Nancy/Lunéville

In the 18th century, the king without a kingdom, Stanislas Leszczynski, became Duke of Lorraine after offering his daughter in marriage to Louis XV. He remodelled Nancy, creating superb architectural complexes including Stanislas Square, the most famous example.

In Lunéville, the château (currently undergoing reconstruction) is a must-see - it’s Lorraine’s own Versailles, complete with French-style gardens... not forgetting the Church of Saint-Jacques, with its superb baroque towers.

Epinal

In between Vosges and the thermal spas, the town of Épinal offers a host of attractions: the marina, Bouzet Lake, the château, from which you can enjoy a clear view over the town, and a cornucopia of floral displays.

2h15 from Paris

Strasbourg

Strasbourg, Capital of Europe, has 2000 years of history behind it but still resolutely looks towards the future.

From the sublime Notre-Dame Cathedral to the “Petite France” district, not forgetting the Kammerzell House, Orangery Park or the Rohan Palace, the city has one of Europe’s most beautiful urban landscapes.

Saverne

On the borders of Alsace and Lorraine, Saverne has a rich architectural heritage: well worth seeing here are the magnificent Château des Rohan and the Maison Katz, a thoroughly traditional half-timbered Alsatian house.

2h00 from Paris

Colmar

Capital of the Alsace wine region, Colmar boasts numerous monuments and a lively old town. A replica of the Statue of Liberty stands in the north of the town where its creator, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was born.

Mulhouse

In the 19th century Mulhouse was the centre of a great industrial boom. The legacy of those times are its unique architecture and rich cultural heritage, including the famous Schlumpf brothers’ automobile museum, one of the biggest prestige car museums in the world.

Château d’Adoménil
Restaurant of a Grand Chef Relais & Châteaux and hotel in a park
This charming château is just a stone’s throw from Lunéville, a town which Voltaire wrote “felt” just like Versailles. In the so-called “Little Versailles” of the Dukes of Lorraine, you can explore the Baccarat crystal works and Nancy’s famous Stanislas square, which is a Unesco World Heritage site. Adoménil is an 18th century building that has been beautifully restored and enhanced by subtle touches of modernity. Grand Chef Cyril Leclerc creates audacious gourmet cuisine that gives pride of place to fresh products, many of them from the surrounding Lorraine countryside. The best of both the past and present come together in the courteous service and fine cuisine at this beautiful hideaway. ...Read more

L’Arnsbourg-Hôtel K
Grands Chefs Relais & Châteaux Restaurant of a Grand Chef Relais & Châteaux and hotel in the country
Even if he can’t take the credit for Yves Klein blue, this particular Mr. Klein could also copyright some of his creations. His name is Jean-Georges Klein and he is the Grand Chef of this family-run establishment where purity reigns both in the décor and on the plate. However, this minimalism is spiced up by a big dash of daring: “Every day I test combinations, contrasts, tales of the unexpected, I try things out, I like to take risks.” Food is served in a light-filled dining room with a glass roof, in the heart of the forest. The motto here is that “everything is possible, as long as you aren’t set in your ways”. ...Read more

Five generations of hoteliers, with a sixth on the way, have managed this property. The interior design is mountain-inspired without being rustic, and luxurious but not over-done. With the comfy chairs and coordinating light wood, they have succeeded in creating an exceptional ambiance located just at the bottom of the ski trails. It is a pleasure to take off your skis and enjoy this alpine retreat. ...Read more

Hostellerie La Cheneaudière
Hotel and restaurant in the country
In the 17th century, Colroy-la-Roche was a German village called Koenigsberg, which means “the King’s mountain”. When it became French again, the village, with its pristine undulating countryside, retained its majestic character. It is here that Mireille and her son Nicolas have created an inviting hotel with the charm of a family home, featuring fascinating historical features. In the Pastoureaux room, the Jura wood panelling comes from the house where Pope Calixtus II was born. On the picturesque veranda, soothing birdsong comes from the trees that the birds have made their home. Relaxation is complete in the blissful spa, which offers body contouring with essential oils. Epicureans will be delighted by the cuisine in the atmospheric restaurant, which showcases the finest products from Alsace, a region with a proud gastronomic culture. Not to be missed: the opening of a new 1,500 m2 “Nature Spa” in spring... ...Read more

Hostellerie Abbaye de la Pommeraie
Hotel and restaurant in town
This abbey has been home to the King’s Lieutenants, barracks for military governors, and finally was the abode of a Baron of the Empire. Tucked away at the foot of the Alsatian vineyards, this now hotel has travelled through time, collecting secrets along the way. The light bedrooms are very comfortable and owners Christiane and Pascal Funaro are warm and welcoming. Food lovers can choose between two places to dine: Le Prieuré, with its sophisticated creations, and the Apfelstuebel, a traditional Alsace-style Winstub, serving up typical country fare. The Sélestat humanist library – which has been inscribed in the Unesco’s Memory of the World Register in 2011 – hosts conferences on medieval books. ...Read more
