In the period between the two World Wars, France decided to protect its Northeast frontier by building large-scale fortifications. While the line ultimately reached Menton and the Mediterranean, Alsace and Lorraine were the first beneficiaries.

The remains of one of man’s greatest military constructions can still be admired: it has 700 km of underground passages, fortifications, small forts and towers and armoured fixed turrets.
