During Easter weekend, the Abbaye de Sainte Croix is organizing an unprecedented weekend of chocolate events, including a chocolate tasting and egg hunt. And why not continue the weekend’s chocolate theme by visiting the best chocolate shops in the area?
For Christians, the egg is a symbol of renewal, intended to express the resurrection of Christ. The custom of giving decorated eggs on Easter Sunday started in France during the 18th century and evolved into making chocolate eggs and hiding them in the garden for children to find.
So in the spirit of tradition, from April 22nd to the 25th, the Abbey offers a special treat to restaurant guests at La Table de l’Abbaye and La Passerelle: chocolate fondue with fresh fruit skewers to assemble yourself and enjoy with a glass of Maury. In the afternoon, an Easter egg hunt for children will take place outdoors. Chocolate weekend packages including accommodation are also available.
By now you should have an appetite to discover the finest chocolate makers in Provence! In Salon de Provence, the master craftsman Jean-Marie Bertrand has more than twenty chocolate recipes. In St. Remy, a chocolate maker well-known by chocolate lovers, Joel Durand, concocts his fabulous chocolates with spices. In Aix-en-Provence, the Puyricard chocolates have been treating fans of "grands crus" for many years. Finally, in Marseille, many swear by the Chocolatière du Panier and its nearly 150 varieties of handmade chocolates.
