Provence

Pagnol, a story of Marseille

The famous Provençal writer spent long childhood holidays in La Treille, a village in Marseille. This haven of peace, which was a source of inspiration for his novels , has retained the soul that captivated the author.

“Le Château de ma Mère”, “Manon des Sources”, “Jean de Florette”... These titles have formed part of our youth. They were set in the Marseille village of La Treille and the surrounding hills of the Garlaban massif. Over thirty years after Marcel Pagnol’s death, there is still much to be gained from a pilgrimage in these hills. The first surprise is the place itself: a real village, with its church, school and restaurant, all in the heart of Marseille, in the 11th district.

Above the church a more comfortable-looking house attracts the attention. This is the “Bastide Neuve”. Born in Aubagne in 1895, Marcel Pagnol soon moved with his family to Marseille. In 1904, concerned for the health of his wife Augustine, Joseph, the father, rented the house for holidays and weekends. Marcel Pagnol roamed the village and its surrounding hills endlessly, forging thousands of boyhood memories that were to re-appear later in many of his fictional adventures.

From the hamlet, walkers will also enjoy the paths that lead towards the summit of Garlaban. Amidst this scented “garrigue”, the white limestone, the pine trees, broom, olives, the “Tête Rouge”, Taoumé and “Baume Sourne” rocks ..., everything reminds us of Pagnol’s writing, awakening long-lost memories of books we read at school. And you mustn’t leave the village without visiting the cemetery. Marcel Pagnol rests there, simply, in a tomb that is often covered with flowers.

Le Petit Nice-Passédat
Grands Chefs Relais & Châteaux Restaurant of a Grand Chef Relais & Châteaux and hotel on the seafront
Nobody loves Marseilles more than the Passédat family. To love Marseilles means to love the Mediterranean, inseparable from the city, just like Gérald Passédat’s cuisine. Fish, naturally, is the basis of his cooking; fished locally, including little-known fish such as galinette and chapon which, served with shellfish, give you the delicious impression of being immersed in a sea of blue. The cult dish of course is “Bouille Abaisse”, light, iodized and zephyrlike, but also the famous loup Lucie (sea bass). Save some room for the desserts which are “extravagant”, admits the chef. As for the view of the sea, it is everywhere… from the terrace and from the restaurant. And since it’s a dreamlike view, you can continue to enjoy it as far as your bedroom, with its spacious and open view of the horizon… ...Read more
