Away with formality! Summer brings down the barriers and makes it easier to take the structure out of meals to make them more relaxed and friendly. Relais & Châteaux de Provence have understood this and use their creativity to offer festive dinners and lunches linked to the many events and festivals that are going on in the region.
Keeping right up to date with the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Villa Gallici is promoting its “Lunches under the plane trees”, a light, “à la carte” formula served at midday until September, under the ancient trees or by the swimming pool. In the evening, so that guests don’t miss a minute of the music, it opens its restaurant from 19.00 to 20.00 with a “Festival” menu. For 65 € (excluding drinks), this offers dishes such as “carpaccio of beef, olive oil, parmesan, mixed-leaf salad and balsamic vinegar”, or “large scampi roast in smoked tea, bundle of green beans, artichoke brochette and mango vinegar”, which are changed every day.
The Abbaye de Sainte-Croix in Salon-de-Provence also spares a thought for its festival-goers. Every day, also from 19.00 to 20.00, it serves its “Festival” menu, priced at 70 €, before the shows start. At lunchtime, it has reinvented “Déjeuners sur l’herbe”, an artistic reference, where, for 30 €, guests cn enjoy a “gourmet platter of slices of country bread with foie gras, salmon and home-made terrine”, followed by fromage frais and a dessert, served with a glass of wine.
On the right bank of the Rhone, the Château de Montcaud, in the Gard, has brought back its famous jazz lunch. Until 17 September, guests can lunch “Louisiana style” on Sundays, enjoying a sumptuous buffet set out under the chestnut trees while listening to the heady rhythms of New Orleans jazz. All this for 66 € per person... and free for children under 116 cm!
In Marseille, the Petit Nice Passédat is promoting its “Maldormé Cove” lunch menu, served from Tuesday to Saturday: mackerel and tuna, whiting, baby pigeon and dessert, for 55 € (excluding drinks). At the Hostellerie Le Phébus, summer is an excuse for organising a cookery-meal-tasting course on 21 July and a Pommery champagne party on 19 August, with a special menu.
Villa Gallici Hotel and restaurant in town Paul Cézanne missed Aix terribly whenever he left, and never ceased to be inspired by its beauty. Many after him succumbed to the charm of this town and the ambience of this Florentine residence. The rooms are sumptuously decorated, and open onto a private garden filled with the fragrance of lavender. The cuisine pays tribute to Provence with dishes like sautéed loin of lamb and aubergine caviar with olives, black garlic sauce and fried basil. Try the famous local speciality of Calisson, sweets flavoured with melon and orange. Villa Gallici offers a special “Cézanne package”, which includes a visit to the painter’s studio. ...Read more France, Aix-en-Provence

Le Petit Nice-Passédat Restaurant of a Grand Chef Relais & Châteaux and hotel on the seafront Nobody loves Marseilles more than the Passédat family. To love Marseilles means to love the Mediterranean, inseparable from the city, just like Gérald Passédat’s cuisine. Fish, naturally, is the basis of his cooking; fished locally, including little-known fish such as galinette and chapon which, served with shellfish, give you the delicious impression of being immersed in a sea of blue. The cult dish of course is “Bouille Abaisse”, light, iodized and zephyrlike, but also the famous loup Lucie (sea bass). Save some room for the desserts which are “extravagant”, admits the chef. As for the view of the sea, it is everywhere… from the terrace and from the restaurant. And since it’s a dreamlike view, you can continue to enjoy it as far as your bedroom, with its spacious and open view of the horizon… ...Read more France, Marseille
Le Phébus & Spa Hotel and restaurant in the country Located between Roussillon and Gordes, Le Phébus is a dry-stone-walled farmhouse where the rooms overlook the tranquil water of their private swimming pools. Its location makes it the ideal base from which to explore the Luberon, and the Carita Spa is the perfect place to relax.
