1906-2006. A century has passed since his death and the spirit of Cézanne breathes stronger than ever on Aix-en-Provence. There are a number of events throughout the year to commemorate the artist, who is famous as far away as Japan. The high point is the “Cézanne in Provence” exhibition. From 9 June to 17 September, the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence is showing 117 of the painter’s works from the world’s most prestigious museums and private collections, providing a unique opportunity to see the paintings of Sainte-Victoire, the artist’s favourite mountain that he painted almost obsessionally, and also to discover a museum that has been fully renovated.
Other special events are also planned. Cézanne’s family home, the Bastide du Jas de Bouffan, is open to the public for the first time, along with the Bibémus quarries, where Cézanne had rented a hut to paint the famous ochre rocks of Sainte-Victoire. Another famous Cézanne landmark, the Lauves studio, in the city centre, will also be working hard to welcome the public in even greater numbers. His memory will be revived at events in Aix and elsewhere throughout the year. Up to 7 January 2007, the Cathédrale d’Images, at Les Baux de Provence, will be projecting a set of images entitled “Colours of Cézanne”. Finally, a wide range of guided walks and hikes around some of the painter’s favourite sites in Aix-en-Provence, Gardanne and Marseille will enable visitors to see in close-up the places that inspired the artist.
