Kennebunkport - Maine - Campobello Island

Before the New Brunswick island of Campobello appeared on any European map, the Passamaquoddy Indians hunted and fished here, calling the place “A bah quiet.” In 1883 the parents of Franklin D. Roosevelt, charmed by Campobello’s early morning mists and bright midday air, decided to make it their summer retreat. FDR spent all his boyhood summers here continuing to visit the island throughout his life. In 1964 a bridge to the mainland linked Campobello to Lubec, Maine opening the area to tourism, and the Roosevelt Campobello International Park was established to preserve the former president’s summer home and memory.

The coastal charms of Kennebunkport on the southern coast of Maine have been appreciated since the end of the last Ice Age - first by natives who fished here, later by sea captains and shipbuilders who were instrumental in making the wealthy village what it is today. Its beauty is well documented: high cliffs and sandy inlets along a coastline dotted with tiny pools. In downtown Kennebunkport walk along Ocean Avenue to Walker’s Point, where the home of George and Barbara Bush overlooks the ocean. Dock Square is packed with shops, galleries and antique stores. Clam shacks and fish houses serve perfect lobster rolls. Summer shines while winter is sleepy.
