Zambia

Zambia is a bridge between Central and Southern Africa and boasts a rich natural heritage of high plateaus, hills and savannas. Its parkland and waterfalls offer the perfect backdrop to spectacular safaris.

This former British colony is an emerging tourist destination and has banked on its natural resources to secure its future. Zambia is the leading copper producer in Africa, has 13 million inhabitants and is home to some of the greatest national parks on the continent – all the ingredients for a pioneering and spectacular trip. Kafue, Isangavo, Luangwa and Liuva, all national parks, are also ideal safari locations. Many safaris are on foot accompanied by a guide, a speciality in Zambia. Hike through the natural countryside and view elephants, chimpanzees and some of the more than 740 species of birds recorded in this country. Zambia is also a land of rivers. It is crossed by the Zambezi and the Kafue, and boasts 17 waterfalls. Of these, the Victoria Falls is the most spectacular – it is worth coming to see it alone. These waterfalls, which are to be found near the border with Zimbabwe and which are 2 km wide, can be visited on foot or by ultralight. You can hear thunder of the water as it plummets over basalt cliffs into the gorge. There are other equally magnificent waterfalls such as Kasanga Falls, Ngambwe Rapids and Kalambo. If you want more peace and quiet, why not explore the lakes? Tanganika, Mweru, Kariba and Bangweulu offer a more intimate view of Zambia inhabited, as they are, by the ghost of famous Dr Livingstone.
