The Berry, Bourges and Sancerre

The Berry, often referred to as the “Heart of France”, covers the departments of Indre and Cher and is a region rich in historic and natural beauty, with a culinary heritage renowned throughout the world. As you explore its Romanesque Art, medieval buildings and bucolic rustic landscapes in Sologne and Loire, you will discover the unusual charms of the area which inspired Alain Fournier’s novel, Le Grand Meaulnes.

Bourges, the capital of the region, takes its visitors back through 2000 years of history and culture. As you go from Saint-Etienne cathedral to the Palace of Jacques Coeur by way of the old town and the modern Berry canal, you will be following in the footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Jacques Coeur and the Bourbon-Condé family.

Sancerre, perched on a hillside covered in superb vineyards, proudly defends its reputation as a gastronomic capital. Over and above its many traditions and its ancient heritage, the town offers its visitors two exceptional AOC-labelled products: Sancerre wine and Crottin de Chavignol cheese, both of which are guaranteed to delight.

Nohant, a largely unknown treasure from the Vallée Noire, preserves the family home of Georges Sand who famously entertained her lover Chopin there. Liszt, Balzac, Flaubert and Delacroix were regular visitors.
