Grand Chef at The White Barn Inn and Spa
My Route du Bonheur from New York to Maine

From Manhattan’s trendy buzz, bright lights and skyscrapers to the provincial charms of New England, with its white-steepled churches and village greens, this route offers it all. For me, a stimulating dose of the Big Apple - think world-class dining, shopping and culture - can be delightfully tempered with a trip out to the countryside and the cozy ambiance of an old inn. The itinerary I am inviting you to discover ranges from New York to Blantyre, a baronial mansion in Massachusetts, to homey Windham Hill in Vermont, and on to the White Barn Inn & Spa in coastal Maine. But these retreats are far from roughing it! At each inn you’ll enjoy pampering and exceptional dining. In the winter New England means crackling fires, downy comforters and birch woods blanketed with snow. In warmer weather, I love to hit the cycling and hiking trails and check out the first-rate live music and dance events.

Relais & Châteaux proposes its Routes du Bonheur for your inspiration: they are suggestions of itineraries that you can adapt to your preferences and desired experiences. Our advisors are at your disposal to individualise your routes and help you make reservations at our properties.
Example for a five-night stay from $1718*
* Minimum indicative rate per person, subject to availability, on the basis of a double room with double occupancy, including accommodation, breakfast and dinner (menu, without beverages) in the properties suggested for the itinerary.

The Surrey Hotel

The modern, sophisticated atmosphere of a New York townhouse
The Surrey Hotel
Let The Surrey be your gracious home base for exploring Manhattan’s Museum Mile and the designer boutiques of Madison Avenue. Discreetly set among the exclusive residences of the Upper East Side and just steps from Central Park, this historic hotel was recently renovated to a luxurious setting. Art Deco furnishings and a unique 30 million dollar art collection, add a modern personality to The Surrey’s traditional feel, tailored to the most discerning guests. The generous guest rooms range from apartment-like salons to spacious suites, but all share the same attention to detail. The professional and genuine associates include chief concierge Lorena Ringoot, a member of Les Clefs d’Or. The hotel’s signature spa offers expert treatments including the popular “Jet lag renewal”. Downstairs are the chic Bar Pleiades and superb Cafe Boulud, popular with both locals and Manhattan’s power elite. Here they dine from a wide-ranging menu of classic French and global dishes. Don’t miss The Surrey’s new seasonal private roof garden for sunset cocktails overlooking Central Park. If you are not up to dressing for dinner, simply pick up the phone. How many hotels can boast room service from a kitchen directed by Grand Chef Daniel Boulud?

Madison Avenue Boutiques and Galleries

Standouts along this smart avenue are Tom Ford’s sleek flagship boutique; Berluti, the only U.S. outlet of the French bespoke and ready-made shoe line; and the elegant new Ralph Lauren womenswear and home decorating store. Special finds include Lisa Perry, for mod 1960s clothing and home decor in a converted bank, with jewelry displayed in the former vault; and, for readers, tiny Crawford Doyle Booksellers where personal service is a hallmark. For fine art, besides the Whitney Museum of American Art, several powerhouse galleries, such as Gagosian and Richard Gray, are intriguing to visit.

Museum Mile

Ten museums lining Fifth Avenue range from the Metropolitan Museum of Art with its global splendors, to the Jewish Museum and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. Others are The Museum of the City of New York and Frank Lloyd Wright’s renowned Guggenheim. A recent addition, in a handsome Beaux-Arts mansion, is the Neue Gallerie filled with early 20th C. Austrian and German art and objects. For a restorative break, try the in-house Cafe Sabarsky, modeled on iconic Viennese cafes.

Lunch at Relais & Chateaux Jean Georges

Relais & Châteaux Grand Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten is best known for his fusions of classic French and Thai cuisines. This flagship of his fine-dining empire, at One Central Park West, offers brilliant interpretations of modern French fare with an occasional Indochinese accent. Dishes are finished tableside here, thus helping the diner savor the experience in anticipation. The Alsace-born perfectionist chef is one of only five in New York holding three Michelin stars. With floor-to-ceiling windows and a plushly soothing, neutral decor, a meal at Jean Georges meets the highest expectations for food, wine, service and ambiance. Nougatine, the separate, more relaxed dining room, overlooks Central Park and offers an exceptional, good-value prix fixe lunch.

Amble along the popular High Line

Amble along the popular High Line, a former elevated railway reinvented as a green urban oasis, 1.45 miles long and fringed with wild flowers. Back at street level, contemporary art is on view at several galleries nearby in Chelsea. Or stroll around Greenwich Village with its brownstone houses, cool boutiques and coffee shops.

Dinner at Relais & Chateaux Del Posto

In the hip Meatpacking district downtown, this opulent Italian is from the Mario Batali-Bastianich stable of top restaurants. It offers multi-course tasting menus and tableside preparation for a sophisticated take on la cucina classica. Hundred-layer lasagne is a signature dish at this new Relais & Châteaux property. The attentive service, spacious seating and tinkling piano music make this worthy of a special occasion. Popular with fashionistas, the soaring, columned space features lots of marble and mahogany-beamed ceilings. Enoteca, a smaller space, offers a limited menu and an extensive wine list.

Blantyre

The perfume of romance
Blantyre
This ivy-clad country manor, modeled after a Tudor Scottish castle, is set in 220 acres in the Berkshires. Ideal for a romantic getaway, its lavishly decorated main rooms, suites and cottages are reminiscent of the Gilded Age. The Crimson Suite features a four-poster bed, wood-burning fireplace and a private terrace; and the other rooms all have their individual period charms and creature comforts. Cordial service and attention to every detail distinguish a stay here. In the old-world, paneled dining room, with fresh flowers, candles and Oriental rugs, expect first-rate French-American dishes like roasted Chatham dayboat cod, venison loin and a tempting vegetarian selection. Windham Hill Inn

An abundance of flowers
Windham Hill Inn
This romantic inn in the Green Mountains of southern Vermont feels like a secret hideaway - it’s situated on an unpaved country lane and surrounded by 160 acres of rolling hills. Built as a farmhouse in 1823, it offers lovely views from most guest rooms, and moves to an olden times tempo. This is a tailor-made spot to unwind. The accommodations are individually decorated in traditional country style. Some rooms have soaking tubs or Jacuzzis, gas fireplaces and balconies or decks. A full breakfast with local maple syrup starts the day, and for dinner in the welcoming dining room, look for butter-poached Maine lobster and veal osso bucco with Vermont cheddar polenta, accompanied by selections from the extensive wine list. In winter, the inn maintains 6 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, and in the summer, tennis and a heated pool.

Le Menton Relais & Chateaux, Boston

Since 2010, multi-award winning US food celebrity Grand Chef Barbara Lynch has invited us on a lovely journey to the Côte d’Azur on the border between France and Italy. To explain her cooking, Barbara calls to mind both "strict French technicality and Italian sensitivity." Close your eyes and open your taste buds to savour the result. Seasonal produce, multitudinous flavours and impeccable service. The heart of Boston almost seems like the Mediterranean...
