Owner and Grand Chef, la Villa Crespi
My Road to Happiness… The Italian Lakes

First we visit Lake Orta, then Lake Maggiore, and finally, Lake Garda. And in between, the Relais & Châteaux that seem to pay tribute to this gentle and entrancing landscape. This trip in Northern Italy is like no other. Perhaps because it is the most beautiful…

I was born in Sorrento in Southern Italy, about 1000 km from the lake region! I was 20 years old when I first came to Lake Orta. I spent a year here before leaving to continue my chef training elsewhere, in Alsace amongst other places. It was only in 1999 that I returned to open, with my wife, the Villa Crespi hotel and restaurant. It was my wife, Cinzia, who really introduced me to the lake and its region. I have found beauty, happiness and a great source of inspiration here. Since then, I have not left this place that fills me with serenity.

Relais & Châteaux proposes its Routes du Bonheur for your inspiration: they are suggestions of itineraries that you can adapt to your preferences and desired experiences. Our advisors are at your disposal to individualise your routes and help you make reservations at our properties.
Example for a six-night stay from €1379*
* Minimum indicative rate per person, subject to availability, on the basis of a double room with double occupancy, including accommodation, breakfast and dinner (menu, without beverages) in the properties suggested for the itinerary.
Activities on site and nearby must be reserved by you.

Villa Crespi

The pleasure of the ultimate in taste, flavour and atmosphere
Villa Crespi
Villa Crespi is an incredible building with Arab-inspired architecture. It was built in 1879 by a Milanese captain of industry, specialised in cotton. In a century and a half, the hotel has been frequented by the King of Italy, Umberto II, and countless famous names from the arts and politics. Today, Villa Crespi is a hotel and restaurant, set in a beautiful landscape with fantastic views. But it is also an atmosphere ¬– one that we aspire to make the most pleasant and enjoyable possible.

A moment of reflection at the Basilica of San Giulio

This is where Nietzsche was rebuffed by the beautiful Salomé, and it was here, on this island, that the great writer was inspired to write Thus Spake Zarathustra. The island of San Giulio has retained its magic. People come to the impressive basilica to sit and reflect in front of the pulpit made of smooth black stone. This building is one of the masterpieces of Romanesque art in Northern Italy. The slightly mystical atmosphere is heightened by the presence of the Carmelite nuns, who still live cloistered on the island.

Fishing in Lake Orta

Fishing is my passion. In the afternoon, after the lunch sitting, I often go to the lake. Depending on weather and mood, you can catch trout, perch, pike and a few eels or zander. I like to be alone here, although sometimes I take my five-year-old daughter with me. Our house, close to Villa Crespi, is right on the waterfront, and I often fish right from our balcony. What more could you ask for?

Relais & chateaux Al Sorriso

A restorative stop at Al Sorriso is almost compulsory. This restaurant was opened over thirty years ago and the food is wonderful. Luisa is a self-taught chef, whose highly refined cuisine draws inspiration from the mountains and the Po Valley. Owner Angelo takes care of the dining room, to the delight of guests… My mother-in-law is a native of the village, and we come here often. I love the gentle landscapes and the local produce.

Da Vittorio

A gourmet journey in Lombardy
Da Vittorio
This is where Cinzia and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary. We are good friends with the Cerea brothers, who are both three-star Grand Chefs. After learning the ropes in the family restaurant, Enrico and Roberto left to discover some of the greatest restaurants abroad. Today, their collaborations in the kitchen are a sheer delight. People come from all over the country to eat here.

On the route...

A boat trip on Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore is so big that its colour changes depending on where you are, from jade green in the north to deep blue in the south. I love its shores, wild and peaceful at the same time. The best way to get to grips with it is, of course, by boat. This allows you to discover the amazing Borromean Islands (the Baroque palace which dominates Isola Bella is absolutely magnificent). Many boats set off from Arona and Locarno. An inflatable boat, a ferry or a cruise… the choice is yours!

Isola dei Pescatori

I was a schoolboy of fourteen when I came here for the first time, and I remember thinking "I would like to live here one day". There are some places that leave an impression on you, and there are some coincidences that aren’t really coincidences. Once here, the atmosphere still seems the same. On the island, time seems to have stood still for several decades, a boon to lovers of nature, peace and quiet, and tradition…

L’Albereta

Here you will feel immortal
L’Albereta
In the heart of the vineyards of Franciacorta, this splendid neo-Renaissance manor, built in the late 19th century, is an invitation to enjoy good food. Converted into a hotel in 1993, Albereta has some wonderful surprises in store, like an astonishing guest room with a retractable ceiling. I love this place, for its harmony and peaceful atmosphere. The chef, Gualtiero Marchesi, will forever be known as the first chef in Italy to be awarded three Michelin stars. In addition, the hotel has one of the finest spas in the country.

On the route...

Monte Isola

Monte Isola has the air of a mountain emerging from the water. The verdant island of Monte Isola rises almost 600 metres above Lake Iseo, and it is also the largest lake island in Europe. Climbing up to the magnificent Madonna della Ceriola sanctuary reveals an impressive panoramic view of the lake and the Bergamo Alps. Lower down, in the seemingly timeless fishing villages, cats weave their way around the fishing nets laid out to dry and disappear into the shadowy alleyways. Life is beautiful…

The wines of Ca’ del Bosco, Erbusco

More than just a vineyard, Ca’ del Bosco represents the revival of Italian wine. This young company offers a range of highly refined wines in the heart of Franciacorta, in a landscape of walnut trees, acacias and oaks. The ultra-modern cellars were designed by renowned architects. This is a special place, where, in addition to the vines, you will find superb works of modern art. A visit to the vineyard gives you the chance to see and understand how the great wines and champagnes that you find on our menu are produced.

Villa Fiordaliso

Join me on a final voyage, so close and yet so far. We are on the shores of another lake, Lake Garda, amongst cypresses and pines, art deco style decoration and sienna facades. After crossing the landing stage and the private beach, you will discover a creative and original menu in the shade of the medieval San Marco tower. The journey continues…
