Owners and Grands Chefs of Dal Pescatore Santini
My Route du Bonheur… from Canneto to Follina

The Santini family are the owners and Grands Chefs of Dal Pescatore Santini.

My grandfather, Antonio Santini, was a fisherman on the pretty Oglio river. For more than four generations, this restaurant has been in our family. Located in the heart of the Parco dell’Oglio Sud nature reserve, our little town of Canneto boasts a history that is filled with music and remarkable wines. We are in the Plain of the Po, between Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. Not far from Verona and Mantua, this corner of Northern Italy is a natural starting point for a journey towards Veneto…

Relais & Châteaux proposes its Routes du Bonheur for your inspiration: they are suggestions of itineraries that you can adapt to your preferences and desired experiences. Our advisors are at your disposal to individualise your routes and help you make reservations at our properties.
Example for a 4 nights stay from 846€*
* Minimum indicative rate per person, subject to availability, on the basis of a double room with double occupancy, including accommodation, breakfast and dinner (menu, without beverages) in the properties suggested for the itinerary.

Dal Pescatore Santini

Freedom to choose what’s unique and precious, this is the real luxury
Dal Pescatore Santini
The history of our restaurant dates back to 1925. Four generations of the Santini family have worked to build the reputation of its food, gradually turning what was once a modest inn into a prestigious Michelin-starred restaurant. Today, three generations continue to work together in the kitchen. Alongside Bruna, Nadia was recently awarded the title of World’s Best Female Chef 2013, and our eldest son Giovanni was named Best Up-and-Coming Chef. Here, life is centred on family and on our food, which, day after day, reinvents local specialities and breathes new life into seasonal ingredients.

The dolls of Canneto

At one time, nearly 3500 of the 5000 inhabitants of our little town worked in the doll business! In the late nineteenth century, Canneto became, without even realising it, the Italian doll-making capital. It was here, in the prestigious workshops of the Furga company, founded in 1870, that the famous three-faced dolls were produced. Today they are collector’s items, highly sought after all over the world.

Cremona, a Mecca for luthiers

Cremona is the birthplace of Antonio Giacomo Stradivari, better known as Stradivarius. In his wake, the town has become the capital of luthiers, the birthplace and symbol of the finest violins in the world. Inside their workshops, craftsmen perform the same slow and meticulous movements, upholding a four hundred-year-old tradition of stringed-instrument making. In the evenings, magnificent concerts are held in the theatre.

Relais & Chateaux Ristorante Il Rigoletto, Reggiolo

The cuisine of our friend Giovanni D’Amato is full of imagination and refinement. This Grand Chef does not shy away from trying new combinations, creating a world that is at once unique and delicious. Inside a beautiful mansion house, Giovanni is now joined in the kitchen by his son Federico. Nadia, our sons and I have had some great gastronomic experiences in this Michelin-starred restaurant.

On the route...

The Renaissance heritage of Mantua

I was lucky enough to be a student in Mantua. Here you can experience both the air of Lombardy and the spirit of Emilia-Romagna. The town has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on account of its exceptional Renaissance heritage, as has the nearby town of Sabbioneta. Explore the Palazzo Ducale, the elegant Palazzo del Te and Mantegna’s house, before heading to the bar Venezia for an early evening aperitif in the shadow of the spectacular Saint Andrew’s Basilica.

Villa del Quar

A romantic getaway in Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet
Villa del Quar
Tucked away behind these high walls is a splendid Renaissance villa which has been entirely renovated. The redolence of history is courtesy of owner Leopoldo Montresor, an architect by training. Amid fountains and olive groves, the estate is situated next to the famous Villa Sofia of Palladio and the vineyards of Valpolicella. Guests are watched over by the goddess Minerva, who can still be admired in a frieze from the fifteenth century.

On the route...

The Verona Arena Festival

Inaugurated in 1913 in this gigantic arena, the Verona Festival is a truly popular celebration of opera. Every night, an audience of some 15000 people gathers around the stage. This is where Maria Callas came to the world’s attention in 1947 in La Gioconda. In 2013, the festival is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Nadia and I attend every summer.

The wines of Monteforte and Soave

The slopes of Monteforte and Soave are home to some beautiful estates and superb vineyards. In Monteforte, Roberto Anselmi’s story is reminiscent of that of many winemakers from the region. A victim of the economic crisis, Roberto’s grandfather was forced to sell his vineyard. His father was a winemaker without his own land, and he swore that he would buy back the estate that had been lost. Today, Roberto cultivates 70 hectares of land and produces white wines which are as delicate as they are elegant. In nearby Soave, pay a visit to the estate of the Pieropan family, who have also been producing magnificent wines for four generations. Wines from these two estates can be found on the menu at Dal Pescatore Santini.

Hôtel Londra Palace

Experience the magic of Venice to the full
Hôtel Londra Palace
For almost a century and a half, the one hundred windows of the prestigious Hotel Londra have overlooked the splendid St. Mark’s Basin. The boat drops you off at the doors of this Venetian palace, decorated throughout with Biedermeier-style furnishings, brocade and impressive tapestries. The palace has seen many artists come and go, including Tchaikovsky, who composed his Fourth Symphony in room 106.

The Carnival of Venice

It was during the Carnival that our sons, who were children at the time, first visited Venice. It was a magical experience for all of us. Walking along in your mask and costume, you come across the characters Harlequin, Bauta, Gnaga and Moretta. For ten days, everyone is an actor in the Carnival. Until Ash Wednesday, time is different here. This is an experience like no other, perfect for enjoying with your family.

The glassware of Marie Brandolini, Murano

All of the water glasses in our restaurant come from the Laguna B workshop in Murano. Artist Marie Brandolini studied with the greatest master glassmakers in Murano. Demonstrating perfect mastery of the glassblowing technique, each of her pieces is unique. She has a decidedly modernist and colourful vision of her art. With Brandolini and other young glass artists, the renewal of Murano continues.

Villa Abbazia

At the crossroads of treasures
Villa Abbazia
Owned by the Zanon De Marchi family, this superb seventeenth century villa is situated in the historic centre of Follina. The splendid building is augmented by a second house, built in the Liberty style, a type of architecture which was popular in the region until the nineteenth century. This is the perfect place for a refreshing summer break, following in the footsteps of Venetian nobility.

On the route...

Prosecco white wines

In Venice, this dry and sparking white wine is what we drink as an aperitif. It’s like our answer to Champagne. We drink it straight up, in cocktails or in kirs. What visitor to Venice has never tried a Spritz, the famous mixture of Prosecco, Campari and Aperol? Of the various estates open to visitors, I recommend the cellars of Nino Franco Spumanti in Valdobbiadene, and the Follador Estate in Col San Partino. Not to be missed… but remember to drink in moderation!

Villa di Maser, Maser

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this villa is one of the masterpieces of the architect Andrea Palladio and of the famous painter of the Venetian School, Paolo Veronese. Built during the 1560s for Venetian nobles, it remains a perfect example of the Italian Renaissance. Today, visitors can still observe the harmony between the buildings and the surrounding environment. Around the villa with its splendid rooms, there is nothing but vines, olive trees, rose bushes and wisteria…

Asolo Golf Club

Owned by the Benetton family since 1995, this very fine golf club has two courses (one 18-hole, par-72 course, and one 9-hole, par-36 course). Its fairways hug the landscape, between hills scattered with woods and the vineyards of Valdobbiadene. A few kilometres away, you will find two more beautiful courses at the Ca’Amata Golf Club in Castelfranco (18 holes, par 71) and at the Villa Condulmer Golf Club in Modigliano (18 holes, par 71).
