Relais & Châteaux Ambassador 2013 and CEO of Il Borro
My Route du Bonheur… in Argentina

Salvatore Ferragamo runs Il Borro, a Relais & Châteaux hotel in Tuscany (Italy). However, today he is talking to us not about Italy, but about Argentina, and about his love of its landscapes and polo.

Argentina is a country that I love. I was lucky enough to visit it when I was younger, when I was looking to spend several months experiencing life on a farm. My family is highly committed to protecting the environment and to sustainable development. To get some experience for my future projects in Italy I wanted to develop that in Argentina. I had the good fortune to live for a while with a famous polo-playing family, Gonzalo and Luisita Tanoira, in Nueve de Rulio. This was a great introduction to the Argentine culture and way of life. I have returned to this country many times and now I would like to take my children there, so that they too can discover its incredible nature.

Relais & Châteaux proposes its Routes du Bonheur for your inspiration: they are suggestions of itineraries that you can adapt to your preferences and desired experiences. Our advisors are at your disposal to individualise your routes and help you make reservations at our properties.
Example for a 15 night stay from 6174 USD*
* Minimum indicative rate per person, subject to availability, on the basis of a double room with double occupancy, including accommodation, breakfast and dinner (menu, without beverages) in the properties suggested for the itinerary.
Activities on site and nearby must be reserved by you.

Algodon Mansion

The glamour of the Belle Epoque in Argentina; a crossroads where the best elements of past and present meet
Algodon Mansion
In the heart of the elegant Recoleta neighbourhood, this hotel is undoubtedly the most beautiful in all Buenos Aires. Behind its French classical facade, the hotel is spacious, combining airiness with sleek modern lines. After a day exploring the town on foot, nothing beats a swim in the rooftop pool. In the evening, don’t miss the restaurant, where gastronomy and refinement go hand in hand. This is a real gem in one of the most pleasant capitals in the world.

El Ateneo bookshop, Buenos Aires

Walking into this bookshop on Santa Fe Avenue is like entering a museum. It is a place of surprising beauty, where the shelves resemble works of art. It is actually an old theatre, founded one hundred years ago, converted into a cinema and then a bookshop. The seats have gone but the long red curtains and gilding remain. You can find more than 120,000 books here. I generally prefer biographical books and novels, though which you can discover the lives of the great men who shaped the world we live in. The bookshop is open until midnight at the weekend.

Caminito, Buenos Aires

This street, located in the working-class La Boca neighbourhood, was the inspiration for the famous tango "Caminito", composed in 1926 by the great Juan de Dios Filiberto. Today it is a kind of open-air museum, with a succession of artist’s workshops, craftspeople, little Italian restaurants (especially Neapolitan ones) and more. This area, with its bohemian spirit, seems to exist outside of the city, to the sound of bandoneons and guitars…

Argentine Polo Open Championship in Palermo

I have been a big fan of polo since I was a child, and when I arrived in Buenos Aires I was dying to see the Polo Open Championship in Palermo. Polo is a very popular sport in Argentina and, every year, this tournament attracts 50,000 spectators. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, and the level of the riders and horses is extremely high. I play polo at a much more modest level (0 handicap), but I still take great pleasure in it. I have a few horses and, from time to time, I play with employees, family and friends at Il Borro.

El Colibri, Estancia de Charme

The best thing a man can do for another is to share his dream
El Colibri, Estancia de Charme
This charming hacienda combines luxury with life on a big Argentinian farm. Surrounded by 170 hectares of virgin forest and the breathtaking Cordoba mountains, the estate is synonymous with wide open spaces and adventure. Guests can watch the gauchos at work, opt for an amazing horseback ride or try their hand at dove hunting. The Fenestraz family, originally from France, have wholeheartedly adopted the Argentinian way of life.

Polo à la carte

Born out of the passion of Raoul Fenestraz, the El Colibri Polo Club consists of several playing fields and training grounds as well as a superb Club House. Registered with the Argentine Association of Polo Pony Breeders, all the horses are bred and trained on the premises. Raoul’s team also offers practical and theoretical lessons for all levels, from beginners to experienced players. A wonderful opportunity to discover and play what is, here, much more than just a sport …

Santa Catalina Church

From El Colibri, take a leisurely horseback ride to the small settlement of Santa Catalina. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Cordoba sierras, this church, with its baroque facade, is located in the heart of a collection of buildings that have been recognised on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Your journey will take you to the priest’s residence, the workers’ quarter and the ruins of the old novices’ house. Together they make up the region’s largest estancia.

On the route...

Festival de la Doma y el Folklore, Jésus Maria

For a few days every January, the little town of Jésus Maria becomes the capital of gauchos. For nearly 50 years, this is where the country’s most important festival, the Festival de la Doma y el Folklore, has been held. The arena plays host to a succession of intrepid riders, all attempting to master the magnificent Criollos, the wild horses of the pampas. A fast and furious rodeo, set to the rhythm of guitars and traditional dances…

Cavas Wine Lodge

A wine paradise at the foot of the Andes
Cavas Wine Lodge
Surrounded by fourteen hectares of vineyards, Cecilia Diaz Chuit and Martin Rigal’s estate is a veritable oasis devoted to wine. At the foot of the Andes, the architecture of the buildings is inspired by the colonial period. This is Mendoza, located in Argentina’s most beautiful wine-producing region, a landscape where nature offers us its very best. From your room, enjoy the view of the Malbec and Chardonnay vines which stretch as far as the eye can see. Between February and April, this landscape takes on all the colours of the palette…

Close to the property...

The Grape Harvest Festival, Mendoza

Since 1936, the Fiesta de la Vendimia, held around the first weekend in March, has been bringing together wine lovers from all across South America. During the festival, which lasts for almost a week, you can enjoy the Benediction of the Fruit, the Vía Blanca de las Reinas and the Carrusel de la Vendimia parades. During the Acto Central, close to a thousand dancers come together to celebrate the year’s harvest. Throughout the town there is a party atmosphere, with dancing and singing. And in between the traditional parades, we pay tribute to the Malbec wines…

On the route...

A horseback ride in the Andes

In 1998, I spent a week horse riding in the Andes. Fantastic days between mountains, in the heart of valleys bordered by narrow trails, and the sweet feeling of being the only person on earth… You walk, you trot, and after a few hours a waterfall or lake with crystal-clear water appears before you. A week of living the life of a gaucho, who moves at the rhythm of his horse and sleeps under the stars…

Las Balsas Gourmet Hotel & Spa

An exotic gem of a setting
Las Balsas Gourmet Hotel & Spa
Patagonia is the last inhabitable land before the South Pole and continues to fascinate all of those who come here. And Las Balsas is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places to stay in this far-flung part of the world at the tip of the South American continent. This romantic hotel with its blue facades offers a superb view of the magnificent lake and surrounding mountains. Take a romantic boat ride, venture out canoeing, or on horseback, or even just relax and be pampered in the soothing and revitalizing spa, overlooking the lake Nahuel Huapi. End a perfect day with a meal in the first-class restaurant, where sophisticated dishes using local produce will delight the palate.

Close to the property...

El Ñirantal, Villa La Angostura

Art and conservation are the main issues here. Through the items it produces, the El Ñirantal project aims to preserve the culture and heritage of the Mapuche Indian community. Their textiles, carpets, ponchos and wooden items are produced in line with fair trade principles. The simultaneously modern and traditional objects that are produced in their workshops continue to draw attention to the memory of the ancient peoples.

El Ñirantal

The Arrayanes forest

Located in Nahuel Huapi National Park, the splendid Arrayanes Forest is home to a rare species of tree, recognisable by its golden bark, related to the myrtle tree. The arrayan tree grows very slowly and remains vulnerable due to the presence of humans and animals. Nevertheless, the average age of the trees in this forest is nearly 650 years! A discovery trail winds through the forest and marks off the area open to visitors. You can reach the site by sailboat from the Las Balsas hotel.

Waterfalls and panoramic views

This is one of the most spectacular walks in the area: climb to the lookout point known as Belvedere to discover Correntoso Lake at the foot of the mountains and its three branches leading to the superb Nahuel Huapi Lake. This landscape, forgotten by man, seems to have remained unchanged for millennia. Away from the rocky cliffs, a steep trail leads to the spectacular Incayal waterfall, which is 50 metres high. A real immersion in the heart of the Mapuche Indian territory.

EOLO - Patagonia's Spirit

The southernmost Relais & Châteaux in the world
EOLO - Patagonia's Spirit
Is there a finer sight? Before you, Lake Argentino, the Patagonian steppe, and the foothills of the Andes. You could spend hours contemplating the view of this vibrant nature. EOLO stretches over more than 3,000 hectares. At the heart of the La Anita Valley, the hotel looks out over a landscape whose colours are constantly changing. The large rooms are reminiscent of the old Patagonian estancias. Here, the meaning of being in the middle of nowhere becomes completely clear. Unless we were quite simply at the beginning of the world?

On the route...

Perito Moreno glacier, Province of Santa Cruz

Located in Los Glaciares National Park, the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most famous in the world. Everyone has seen pictures of the ice falling and crashing into the lake opposite. According to scientists, the glacier is advancing by two metres per day, but is not shrinking. Perito Moreno is almost 5 kilometres wide and 170 metres high (about a hundred of which are underwater). I dream of bringing my children here, so that we can listen to nature’s pulse together…

Tierra del Fuego

Just one mention of Tierra del Fuego and you are transported on a journey. In Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city, inside an old bank, is the End of the World Museum. A surprising place, which holds the splendid prow of the Duchess of Albany, salvaged from the water after the British ship ran aground in 1893 in Policarpo bay. You can discover many end of the earth stories here, including those of the old convicts, political dissidents, anti-establishment artists and other anarchists who were sent to Ushuaia. The former recidivists prison is today a naval base, which is also open to visitors.

The Punta Tombo Reserve

It is here, at the heart of the Punta Tombo Reserve, that the world’s most important sites for Magellanic Penguins are found. The reserve is one of the main reproduction and birth sites for the species. Depending on the season, there may be more than a million individuals here. It is a breathtaking spectacle, especially between the end and the beginning of the year, when the babies leave their nests, their feathers change and they make their first movements in the sea…
